Result of a persistent low pressure that fformed off the coast of Australia on Monday (5 days ago) and has largely sat in the Tasman Sea for several days, unable to move. There's also been significant additional rain in the area in previous days.

There has been 220 millimetres of rainfall in Whangārei overnight, a level that is only expected once every 500 years with two civil defence centres opening in the city for residents who have had to leave their homes because of flooding.
