8 am Monday (Vanuatu): Cyclone HAROLD really pulled together overnight, and is now an intense storm with a big, clear eye—now a Cat 5 on the Oz scale. (JTWC estimates winds of 125 knots (145 mph/230 km/h), making this a mid-range Cat 4 on the USA scale.) It's just about to make landfall on the W coast of Espiritu Santo (pop ~40K). The cyclone will trek ESE, so the island's largest town, Luganville (pop ~10K), will begin to really feel the impacts in the coming hours. Other islands that will feel HAROLD's wrath over the next 6-24 hours, include Malekula, Malo, Aore, Tutuba, Ambae, Maewo, Pentecost, Ambrym, Epi, and others in this area. This is a dangerous cyclone. TAKE COVER NOW.

Shock news!PRESS RELEASE: 4/1/2020. HAYWARD, CA The American Weather Association today announced its decision to abandon the professional title of Meteorologist. After years of dealing with misspellings of the word, and with people believing that meteorologists are experts on meteors rather than weather, the association made the surprising move. Experts in the field of weather will now be known as the Atmospheric Professional Resource Investigative Liaison: Forecasting Ongoing Open Laminar Sky Development and Yougs. "We think this better describes what we do," said Frosty Grauple, the Association's PR Director. "It may be a mouthful, but we encourage our members to just use the acronym."

A new depression has developed over North Australia and is currently moving into the Coral Sea. It's likely this will affect NZ's weather next week as an ex TC. A fascination for our local NW arch and its uniqueness were one of the things that developed an interest for me as a kid in meteorology. What was it that got you started?Strong northwesterly winds across the South Island today, in combination with lots of mid to high level moisture have made for ideal conditions to form a classic Northwest Arch cloud east of the South Island ranges. Beneath the "Arch", waves have developed Asperatus clouds (sometimes called "Asperitas") a wave-like formation and a relatively newly named sub-species of cloud. You can find out more about these clouds in the WMO International online cloud atlas here https://cloudatlas.wmo.int/clouds-supplementary-features-asperitas.html This image shows the Asperatus cloud features observed this morning on the webcam near Timaru and beneath the webcam image is a True Colour Satellite image of the sharp Arch cloud east of the Divide. Thanks to JMA (Japan Meteorological Agency) for the image. ^AB
